Background
Human beings are intelligent and noble creatures who have culture and civilization, as the result they are able to create their life to be better and better. Then, human civilization also creates norms that can be guidance for the society in order to gain dignity. In this case, people have to maintain and develop a kind of “software” of humanity to be able to behave in a good manner, and that software is popularly known as “character”. In order to build and develop a human being with a good character, it requires an education process. Besides, maintaining and developing a good human being can be conducted in various aspects of human life, such as, culture including, through languages, arts, and its learning activities.

A person who has good character is a noble creature, because he/she has “akhlak” (good ethics or moral). Therefore, building and developing character through languages, arts, and culture become part of a great job of “humanization process” in this modern era. Based on those reasons, the Faculty of Languages and Arts of Universitas Negeri Padang (FBS UNP) has a strong will and commited to run an The Third International Seminar on Language and Arts (ISLA-3) under the theme “Character Building through  Language, Culture, Arts, and Their Learning”.

English Department of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang will conduct The International Seminar on the English Language Teaching (SELT). The theme of this annual seminar is “Language Awareness on TEFL for Multilingual Leraners”

Language awareness is an  explicit knowledge about language, and conscious perception and sensitivity in language learning, language teaching and language use. Becoming aware of the nuances and meanings of a language  one of part of  Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL)  goals.  By increasing students’ language awareness, the students will be able to understand, appreciate and use the language correctly.

This international seminar is conducted to discuss about  what the phrase ‘language awareness’ means, what role it plays in the language classroom (TEFL), and ways teachers can increase their students’ language awareness. Building language awareness also involves helping students gain a positive attitude toward English as foreign language.  By becoming conscious of strategies that can be used to learn the foreign language, students may become more active in and more responsible for their own learning.

The Seminar will be organized under the theme: “Language Awareness on TEFL for Multilingual Leraners”.

We kindly invite experts, researchers, lecturers, teachers, practitioners, and students to present scientific papers under the scope of the general theme and participate in the seminar. The papers can be also related to the following sub-topics:

Linguistic background and language awareness for Indonesian learners
Teaching literature and language awareness for multilingual learners
Media and Instructional Design on TEFL for multilingual learners
Methods and techniques for the success of language awareness in TEFL
Applicable researches supporting the success of language awareness in TEFL
ESP and language awareness in TEFL

Two Weeks in Nanyang Polytechnic International Singapore

This a very nice experience where we learn and share with the Nanyang Polytechnic International, Singapore. All the instructors and staffs shared many information and experience to 18 lecturers from Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP).

This campus is situated in Ang Mo Kio that is connected to many areas in Singapore. This campus has implemented e-learning in all faculties in this polytechnic.

English Department Publishes Two More Scientific journals

After issuing Lingua Didaktika a journal on Language, Literature, and Language Teaching, English Department of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang publishes Journal of English Language Teaching and English Language and Literature.

These two journals aim at publishing ideas, researches, and opinion related to language, literature and teaching development. These journal will be launched formally by Rector of Universitas Negeri Padang, Prof. Dr. Phil. Yanuar Kiram. on Friday, September 28, 2012.

 

International Seminar on Languages and Arts

Faculty of Languages and Arts of State University of Padang (FBS UNP) will conduct an International Seminar. This seminar is planed on 20-21 October 2012. There will be 4keynote speakers from various countries.

  • Prof. Brenton Doecke (Deakin University, Australia) English Language Teaching expert,
  • Prof. Dr. Zaenal Abdul Latif (Pusat Kebudayaan University Malaya, Malaysia)  performing art expert,
  • Dr. Karta Jayadi, M.Sn. (Dekan Fakultas Seni dan Desain Univ. Negeri Makasar, Indonesia) fine art expert,
  • Prof. Dr. Hasanudin WS, M.Hum. (FBS Universitas Negeri Padang, Indonesia) Indonesian Literarature expert..

The theme of the seminar is “Revitalizing the teaching of languages and arts .”

The seminar organizers invite language and art teachers in schools, education institutes, universities, education administrators, policy makers, researchers and all those who are interested in the language learning and teaching to submit their paper (full) for parallel sessions.

The seminar will be conducted at four stars hotel in Padang “Grand Inna Muara” Padang.

Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas Negeri Padang (FBS UNP) akan melaksanakan Seminar Internasional mengenai bahasa dan seni pada 20-21 Oktober 2012. Tema seminar internasional ini “Revitalisasi Pembelajaran Bahasa dan Seni dengan Peningkatan Sinergi Dosen dan Guru Profesional.”
